How Exposed Birthdays and MD5 Passwords Enable Account Takeovers

The Buffy Forums breach combined email addresses, plain MD5 password hashes, and birthdates in a single dataset. MD5 without modern salting is seperate from adequate password protection: attackers can crack these hashes with pre-computed rainbow tables in minutes.
