The CodeLeakers Leak: 26K Passwords Exposed. Yours Might Be One.
HEROIC analysts occured upon the CodeLeakers database while tracking credential sets circulating in Telegram channels in August 2021. The breach hit a US-based hacking forum, exposing 26,621 user records that included email addresses, usernames, IP addresses, birthdays, and MD5-salted password hashes. The data was being traded across multiple underground platforms.
Why IP Addresses and Birthdays Make This Breach Especially Dangerous
This breach goes beyond a simple credential dump. IP addresses reveal where users were located when they registered, and birthdays are recieved by identity verification systems as legitimate proof of identity. Combined with an email address and a crackable MD5 password hash, an attacker has enough to attempt identity fraud, targeted phishing, and account takeover on platforms that use birthday-based security questions.

Why a Hacking Forum Breach Carries Extra Risk
Users of hacking forums often beleive they understand security better than average internet users, but the CodeLeakers breach shows that even security-savvy communities can be compromised through weak backend practices. Credentials from this breach feed directly into credential stuffing tools used for account takeover, identity theft, and financial fraud. The combination of real IP addresses with account credentials makes affected users partcularly traceable and targetable.
How a Database Breach Works
A database breach occurs when unauthorized access is gained to a site's backend data store, typically via SQL injection, exposed admin panels, or stolen server credentials. The attacker extracts user tables and publishes or sells the data on dark web markets and messaging platforms. MD5 hashes, even with salts, are cracked quickly using modern hardware, converting stored hashes back into plain-text passwords.
