HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system discovered the EliteSkills data breach, exposing 48,690 records in August 2018. EliteSkills is a U.S.-based community-driven writing and creative forum platform where writers share poetry, stories, and creative works and receive feedback from peers. The compromised data included email addresses and MD5 password hashes, putting registered community members at risk of credential-based attacks.

Why This Is Dangerous

Creative writing and community forum platforms attract writers and artists who often share personal creative work under their accounts, making their profiles highly personalized and potentially sensitive. MD5 password hashes are cryptographically broken and can be cracked within seconds to minutes using modern GPU-based cracking tools and precomputed rainbow tables, effectively exposing plaintext passwords. Community members who reused their EliteSkills credentials on email accounts, social media platforms, or other creative writing communities face cascading account compromise risks.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Address
  • Password Hash (MD5)

Why This Matters

With nearly 49,000 records exposed, the EliteSkills breach provides attackers with a dataset of engaged creative community members whose cracked credentials can be used for credential stuffing attacks across Gmail, social media, and content platforms. Creative community forum accounts often contain personal information, published works, and private messages that attackers can exploit for social engineering, identity theft, or targeted phishing campaigns designed to appear from within the writing community.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when attackers exploit security vulnerabilities in forum software, server configurations, or third-party plugins to gain unauthorized access to stored user data. Community writing forums frequently run on open-source forum software that may contain known vulnerabilities if not kept updated with security patches. The use of MD5 for password hashing, which was already considered outdated at the time of this breach, provides minimal protection against modern cracking techniques. Once attackers extract the database, credential data is distributed through underground forums and dark web marketplaces.
