HEROIC analysts identified a data breach linked to Job Platform, a now-defunct Indian employment website, which occured in August 2018. The breach exposed 48,609 user records from the site's database, containing email addresses and passwords stored entirely in plaintext. Job seekers who registered on this site shared their primary contact email and created a password, neither of which recieved any meaningful protection. Storing passwords in plaintext is one of the most basic security failures a company can make, and it means every single password in this dataset was immediately readable by anyone who obtained the database.

Why Plaintext Passwords From a Job Site Are Particularly Risky

People tend to use their most-accessed email address when registering for job platforms, which makes these accounts especially valuable to attackers. Combine that with a plaintext password and you have a direct key to whatever else that person uses the same password for. Employment site users are also often in career transition periods, making their email accounts partcularly valuable targets for phishing and social engineering. Criminals who use these credentials for credential stuffing attacks can unlock email accounts, social media profiles, and financial services with minimal effort.

Why This Breach Still Threatens You Today

Breach data from 2018 remains active in criminal markets years later. Because Job Platform is now defunct and never notified users of the exposure, many affected people have no idea their credentials are out there. This makes credential stuffing attacks especially effective. If you registered on this site and reused that password elsewhere, those accounts are still at risk today. The path from a leaked plaintext password to account takeover, identity theft, or financial fraud is fast and largely automated.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to the server or storage system where a website keeps its user records. Common causes include unpatched web application vulnerabilities, misconfigured databases left open to the internet, and compromised administrator accounts. For a small employment site like Job Platform, limited IT resources often meant weaker security practices. Once an attacker gets in, they can download the entire user database in minutes, and the absence of password hashing means the data is ready to exploit immediately.
