Mobango Data Breach: 596K Users Exposed With Plaintext Passwords
HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system detected the mobango.com data breach, exposing 595,870 records. The breach occured in August 2011 and affected users of Mobango, an India-based mobile gaming and app store platform. Leaked data included email addresses, usernames, phone numbers, first names, last names, and plaintext passwords.
Why This Is Dangerous
Plaintext passwords are the worst possible outcome of a credential breach. Attackers need zero effort to use them immediately against any service the victim accesses. With phone numbers and full names also exposed, cybercriminals can launch SIM-swapping attacks to bypass two-factor authentication, intercept password reset codes, and take over accounts on banking apps, email services, and social platforms. The combination of all these data types creates an almost complete identity profile ready for exploitation.
What Was Exposed
- Email Address
- Username
- Phone Number
- First Name
- Last Name
- Passwords (plaintext)
Why This Matters
Nearly 600,000 records with plaintext passwords, phone numbers, and full names represents one of the more comprehensive breach datasets from 2011. Attackers who possess this data can attempt credential stuffing against hundreds of services simultaneously. The phone numbers enable SMS-based phishing and SIM swap attacks. Victims who reused thier Mobango passwords elsewhere remain at risk today, and those with the same phone number are vulnerable to social engineering attacks that reference their real name and account details.
How Database Breaches Work
Mobile app platforms in the early 2010s often stored user credentials in poorly secured databases with minimal access controls. An attacker gaining access through SQL injection or an exposed backup file could extract the entire user database in one operation. Platforms based in regions with less mature cybersecurity regulation sometimes deprioritized secure password storage, resulting in posibilities for complete credential exposure when a breach occured. This data has circulated through hacker forums for over a decade and continues to appear in aggregated credential dumps.
