HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system uncovered the The Tech Game data breach, exposing 62,310 records. The breach occured in September 2011 and affected users of The Tech Game, a US-based gaming forum at thetechgame.com. Compromised data included first names, last names, email addresses, and MD5-hashed passwords.

Why This Is Dangerous

MD5 password hashes from 2011 are easily cracked with modern hardware. Attackers run these hashes through rainbow tables and GPU-accelerated cracking tools, recovering the original passwords within hours or days. Once cracked, those credentials get tested against email providers, gaming platforms, and financial services in automated stuffing attacks. The personal name data also enables more convincing social engineering campaigns that target victims by name.

  • Last Name
  • Email Address
  • Passwords (MD5 hash)

Why This Matters

Full name combined with email address is a powerful combination for identity-based attacks. Phishing emails addressed to the victim by thier real name have significantly higher open and click rates than generic messages. Cybercriminals merge data like this into larger identity profiles that get sold on dark web marketplaces, fueling fraud, account takeover, and social engineering campaigns that continue long after the original breach date.

How Database Breaches Work

Gaming forum databases were frequent targets for SQL injection attacks in the early 2010s. An attacker finds an unsanitized input field, crafts a malicious query to extract the user table, and captures every account record in a single operation. The resulting data file is compressed and posted to hacker forums where it spreads rapidly. Seperate groups then use the data independently, cracking passwords and building targeted attack lists that remain in circulation for years.
