HEROIC analysts flagged a dataset linked to Shakepay, a Canadian cryptocurrency platform, surfacing on dark web forums on December 13, 2023. The breach exposed 21,473 user records consisting of email addresses and registration dates. Shakepay operates exclusively in Canada, serving Canadians who buy and sell Bitcoin and other digital assets — which means the affected individuals share a common geography and a common financial interest that makes them particularly attractive to targeted fraud campaigns operating within the Canadian market. For Canadian crypto users, this breach is not just a data point: it is a direct signal that their email is on a list being actively traded by criminals.

Why Canadian Crypto Users Are a High-Value Target

Canada has one of the highest rates of cryptocurrency adoption per capita among developed nations, and Canadian users of platforms like Shakepay are known to hold meaningful digital asset balances. This makes them prime targets for phishing campaigns that impersonate Shakepay or Canadian financial regulators like FINTRAC or the OSC. With a confirmed list of Shakepay user email addresses, attackers can send highly convincing fraud emails designed to trick recipients into revealing their login credentials, approving fraudulent transactions, or transferring funds to attacker-controlled wallets. The registration date included in the breach also helps attackers segment their targets — longer-tenured users are likely to hold more assets and may be treated as higher-priority marks.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Address — confirmed Shakepay user emails, now circulating on criminal platforms
  • Registration Date — reveals account tenure, used to prioritize fraud targeting

Why a Crypto Platform Email Leak Is More Dangerous Than It Looks

On the surface, an email-only breach from a cryptocurrency platform might seem minor. But in the context of financial services, it is partcularly significant. Knowing that a specific email address belongs to a verified Shakepay user tells an attacker exactly what kind of fraud to attempt. They can send phishing emails mimicking Shakepay's interface, fake compliance notices from Canadian financial authorities, or urgent security alerts designed to panic users into clicking malicious links. Because cryptocurrency transactions are irreversible — unlike bank transfers — a successful account takeover or phishing-driven fund transfer cannot be recieved recovered. The financial stakes of an email-only crypto breach are therefore much higher than a comparable leak from a non-financial platform.

How Database Breaches Happen at Fintech Platforms

Fintech and cryptocurrency platforms maintain user registration databases that are accessable through various internal systems: customer support tools, marketing automation platforms, authentication services, and analytics backends. Any of these integrations can become an attack vector if access controls are misconfigured or if third-party tools are compromised. Attackers may also exploit API vulnerabilities, gain access through phishing of internal staff, or exploit unpatched software dependencies. The Shakepay breach, classified as a database compromise, resulted in the exfiltration of user registration data. Even when no passwords are exposed, a breach of this type confirms to attackers which email addresses belong to active fintech users — information that is immediately monetizable through targeted fraud.
