Search Your Email: SlideTeam Data Breach Exposed 1.46M Accounts
Search your email address now: if you ever created an account on SlideTeam, the presentation template platform at slideteam.net, your data may have been exposed for years without your knowledge. HEROIC analysts found that a breach originating in April 2021 was publicly released on a well-known hacking forum on July 11, 2024, affecting 1,464,251 records. The compromised data includes email addresses, first and last names, and password hashes stored using MD5 with salt, drawn from a Magento database compromise. The breach affects users primarily located in the United States.
Why This Is Dangerous
Although MD5(Salt) hashing provides more protection than plaintext storage, MD5 is a fast hashing algorithm and salted MD5 hashes can still be cracked using modern GPU-based tools, particularly for users with common or short passwords. The three-year gap between the initial breach in April 2021 and the public release in July 2024 means affected users had no opportunity to protect themselves during that period. Any accounts where the same password was reused elsewhere remain at risk.
What Was Exposed
- Email Address
- First Name
- Last Name
- Password Hash (MD5 with Salt)
Why This Matters
Even hashed passwords become liabilities once a breach goes public. Credential stuffing attacks test cracked or guessed passwords against other services where victims may have reused the same password. Identity theft is enabled by the combination of full name and email address. Account takeover (ATO) on SlideTeam or associated services is a direct risk for anyone who has not already changed their password since 2021. The long dormancy of this breach before public release is a reminder that data stolen years ago can resurface at any time.
How Database Breaches Work
This breach was attributed to a compromised Magento instance, the e-commerce platform commonly used to power online storefronts. Attackers exploit known vulnerabilities in unpatched Magento installations to gain access to the underlying database. Once access is obtained, the entire user table, including account credentials and personal information, can be extracted in minutes. Magento-based breaches are well documented and recurring, making platform patching and database access controls critical defensive measures for any organization running it.
