HEROIC analysts identified the sohu.com breach while reviewing Chinese internet portal datasets circulating in credential aggregation lists. In December 2011, sohu.com, a major Chinese internet and media portal, was breached and 795,014 user records were exposed. The stolen data included email addresses and plaintext passwords that have continued to circulate quietly on underground forums and Telegram channels.

Why the sohu.com Breach Is Dangerous

Sohu.com is one of China's largest internet portals, serving email, news, and entertainment services to tens of millions of users. A breach of its user database with plaintext passwords means every credential in the dump is immediately usable. The breadth of Sohu's services means many users had accounts tied to multiple connected platforms, amplifying the potential impact if those passwords were reused across accounts.

  • Plaintext passwords

Why This sohu.com Data Puts You at Risk

Plaintext passwords from breaches like sohu.com are the core ingredient in credential stuffing attacks. Automated tools test each email and password pair across hundredds of websites around the world. If you used your sohu.com password on any other platform, that account is exposed to takeover. Attackers who gain access to email accounts can then trigger password resets on banking, shopping, and social platforms, creating a chain of unauthorized access.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a website's backend, usually through code vulnerabilities, misconfigured servers, or stolen administrator credentials. Once inside, the attacker exports the user table and distributes it through criminal networks. Plaintext password storage means the stolen data is immediatly actionable without any cracking step, making this type of breach especially severe for affected users.
