In August 2023, HEROIC analysts identified a stealer log file that had been freely shared on Telegram by an anonymous user. The file, known as the STONE ISLAND FREE LOGS breach, contained 7,947 records pulled from infected computers across the United States. The exposed data included email addresses, plaintext passwords, and URLs from the compromised endpoints.

Why This Is Dangerous

Stealer logs are especialy dangerous because they capture credentials at the moment of use, meaning the passwords are almost guarenteed to be real and active. An attacker who gets hold of this data can immediately attempt to log in to email accounts, online shopping profiles, and banking portals. The plaintext nature of the passwords removes any protection that hashing might otherwise provide.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses
  • Plaintext Passwords
  • URLs (the websites where credentials were harvested)

Why This Matters

When email addresses and plaintext passwords are leaked together, criminals can launch credential stuffing attacks against dozens of popular websites in minutes. Most people reuse passwords, so one breached account often unlocks many others. This creates a chain reaction that leads to account takeover, identity theft, and financial fraud. If your email and password appeared in this file, every service where you used the same login is now at risk.

How Stealer Logs Work

A stealer log is the output of malware called an infostealer. This type of malicious software secretly installs itself on a victim's computer, often through a fake download, a phishing email, or a compromised software package. Once running, it silently records every username and password typed into the browser, saves the URLs of websites visited, and copies stored autofill data. All of that information is then packaged into a log file and sent back to the attacker. These log files are frequently traded or given away for free on Telegram channels and dark web forums, which is exactly how this STONE ISLAND FREE LOGS file became public.
