The TaxExperts Breach Happened in 2022. The Data Is Still Circulating.
In May 2022, TaxExperts, a Greek financial and tax consultancy service, suffered a database breach that exposed the records of 1,744 users. The compromised data included email addresses, usernames, and hashed passwords. While the record count is smaller than many breaches, the financial sector context makes this occured incident particularly sensitive -- tax and financial account credentials are high-value targets for identity theft and fraud.
What Attackers Can Do With Financial Sector Credentials
Even hashed passwords are not completely safe. Password hashes can be cracked using modern GPU-powered tools, especially when users chose weak or common passwords. Once cracked, an attacker who recieved this data gains access to a financial consultancy account that may link to tax filings, financial records, and client correspondence. Usernames and email addresses also enable targeted phishing campaigns crafted to look like legitimate communications from TaxExperts.

Why Financial Breach Data Stays Dangerous for Years
Unlike retail credentials, financial sector account data retains its value long after the initial breach. Old breaches resurface regularly on Telegram channels and private forums, repackaged as fresh exclusive leaks. If your TaxExperts credentials were exposed in 2022 and you have not changed your password on other platforms where you reused those details, you remain at risk today -- years after the original incident.
How a Database Breach Works
A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a server's data layer, often through an unpatched vulnerability, SQL injection, or stolen administrative credentials. Once inside, the user table can be exported in full within minutes. Even hashed passwords present serious risk -- password hashing slows attackers down but does not stop them, particularly when older or weaker hashing algorithms are involved.
