In January 2024, a Telegram user uploaded a stealer log file labeled "BHF FREE," exposing 15,883 records of compromised credentials to an open channel. HEROIC analysts reviewing the file found that each record includes an email address, a plaintext password, and a URL identifying the associated service, meaning anyone who downloaded it had ready-to-use login credentials without any cracking required.

Why This Is Dangerous

Stealer logs with plaintext passwords are among the most immediately dangerous forms of credential exposure. Unlike breaches where passwords are hashed and require time to crack, this data can be fed directly into automated account takeover tools. The URLs included alongside each record tell attackers exactly which service each credential belongs to, letting them target the right platform right away instead of guessing.

Free public distribution on Telegram means this data spread quickly beyond the original uploader. A public post like this one can be downloaded by a large number of people within hours, unlike a private sale with a limited buyer pool.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • Associated service URLs

Why This Matters

Nearly 16,000 compromised credentials is a substantial dataset, and because every record contains a usable plaintext password, the risk is high for everyone included. This breach dates back to January 2024, which means many affected people have likely never been notified and may still be using the exposed password today.

How Stealer Logs Work

Infostealer malware typically arrives through a phishing email, a fake software installer, or a drive-by download from a compromised website. Once it runs, it harvests credentials from browser storage and captures login form activity, all without the victim noticing anything unusual.

The collected data is bundled into a structured log file and sent to the attacker's server. Operators then decide whether to sell the data privately or release it publicly for free, as happened with this "BHF FREE" upload, often after private buyers have already had a chance to use the freshest data.
